Dealing with a recurring leak in her social housing apartment, Goeun Bae decided to research the social and historical structures and alienation hidden behind the ostensible appearance of Amsterdam. In the process, she discovers its housing policy and history of Surinamese migration policy. In the resulting video work Blue Ocean (2020) she takes on the role of excavating the history of the Bijlmer area of Amsterdam, examines its current status, and previews its future. Poetically, she connects a daily experience to concepts such as housing policy, migration, gentrification, and architecture.
Goeun Bae (b. 1984) is a multi-media artist based in Amsterdam. Her practice spans from performance, film, object, photography, to drawing. Her work tackles historical and political issues, always departing from what might seem like trivial personal experiences. By examining situations from daily life, she illustrates how the hierarchies and structures of society do not exist separately from ourselves as individuals, and that we are all interconnected.
