Alvin Tran

Three Petals, 2022

Video, color, sound; 5:05 min

The newly commissioned work by Alvin Tran, made in collaboration with writer Wendy Xu and singer Katie, is titled “Three Petals” (2022). Based on a poem written by Xu, and the song ‘Future Love’ by K-pop star Katie, Tran created a choreography recorded for video. Schooled and working across multiple continents, Tran began his training in ballet, and positions dance history in relation to Kpop imagery. Within his choreographic work, he brings into conversation orientalist and western dance repertoire, while injecting Kpop motifs and gestures. The result is a new form of hybrid performance that employs modes of scoring in music and dance found throughout the world that disconnects the viewer from a specific style in favor of something more amorphous or difficult to contain.
